Elafonisi with the magical beach is located near the southwest tip of Crete 43 km from Kissamos and 76 km from Chania.
Renowned worldwide, this small island with white and pink sand, separated from the mainland by a lagoon depth of 1 meter or so.
There fled in 1824, about 850 women and children to escape the Turks, as an underwater trail led to an area only if you knew you can use it. However, a traitor told the Turks, on the day of Easter 1824, and massacred 850 to punish the rebellious Cretan people.
Also in February 1907 the steamer Imperatrix, while traveling to India was wrecked on the reefs around the island. Just 38 people (out of 140) were saved from the raging waves, and we owe it to self-sacrifice and care of the monks of Chrysoskalitissas and the few locals.
Although it has connected the beauty of these two incredible tragedies, the idyllic landscape is one of the most beautiful and most visited beaches in Crete, always present in as top world which must be enjoyed by every visitor.
